Stepping into my first day with Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) Social Media, I was super nervous, but I quickly felt right at home. The second half of that initial day involved bombarding Gaby with social media questions, and I got to meet the other interns and tour the facilities. It was an immediate dive into the exciting world of sports and entertainment social media!
Mastering the Tools of the Trade
One of the first major learnings was how to use Asana, a crucial tool for team collaboration. I quickly understood the importance of logging everything into Asana, ensuring the entire team could access information easily, even a year later. My tasks included going through all social media platforms to find specific social accounts, making them readily accessible for Sabrina and the social team to use during events. I also gained experience with social media analysis on Blinkfire, which provided deep insights into content performance.
Decoding Content Engagement and Strategy
A significant part of my internship involved understanding how different content impacts audience engagement and impressions. I learned to analyze key metrics like Impressions, Engagement, Reach, Video Views, Post Count and Post Valuations. This allowed me to see what content was most attractive to our audience and how different pieces could be valued for advertising. It was fascinating to compare our content’s performance with other teams in the league and track how engagement changes year after year.
Cultivating Creative Approaches
My work included contributing to content for major events and personalities, such as The Global Games and Tyler the Creator. Through this, I embraced key lessons for content creation:
• Brainstorm Freely: Never censor yourself in brainstorming sessions, as even a seemingly silly idea can inspire others.
• Be Creatively Resourceful: Learning to find fresh, standout approaches, even when facing limitations, and incorporating relevant trends can make content more impactful.
• Speak Up and Ask Questions: Growth comes from curiosity, so don’t hesitate to ask why things are done a certain way or to share your own ideas. This is key to building skills and creative confidence.
The Power of Collaboration and Efficiency
Beyond content creation, I learned the importance of improving systems to work smarter and more efficiently, which benefits the entire team. Most importantly, I discovered that collaboration is everything. Success truly comes from working across teams, departments, and even with professionals across the industry.
Biggest Lessons & A Special Thanks!
My time at HBSE Social Media was incredibly enriching. One memorable (and slightly humorous) lesson was that as a short girl, filming can definitely be an arm workout!
I extend a huge THANK YOU to HBSE for this incredible experience!
